Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure that is performed to remove the infected or damaged pulp from inside a tooth. The pulp of a tooth contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, and it is responsible for providing nutrients and sensation to the tooth.
If the pulp of a tooth becomes infected or damaged due to injury, decay, or a deep filling, it can cause severe pain, swelling, and sensitivity. In such cases, a root canal treatment is necessary to remove the damaged pulp and prevent further infection or damage.
During a root canal treatment, the dentist or endodontist (a specialist in treating the inside of teeth) will make a small hole in the top of the tooth to access the pulp. They will then remove the damaged pulp and clean and shape the inside of the tooth. Afterward, they will fill the root canals with a special material and seal the tooth. In most cases, a crown is placed over the tooth to protect it and restore its appearance and function.
Root canal treatment is a highly successful procedure that can save a damaged or infected tooth from being extracted. With proper care and regular dental check-ups, a treated tooth can last a lifetime.
